Highlights

Knutsford

Our home town, renowned for its restaurants, bars and fine food purveyors.

Anderton Boat Lift

A masterpiece of engineering with visitor centre and a great cafe.

Great Budworth

One of Cheshire's finest villages. If the archetypal village complete with a cracking village pub.

Route Description

Exiting Knutsford we follow the back route to the M6 at Over Tabley, taking care when crossing the busy A556 by The Windmill Inn. Continuing through Pickmere and Wincham which is very close to Lion Salt Works and worth a short detour.

Northwich has numerous timber framed buildings (built for the subsidence from salt works) and a busy marina plus numerous shops, cafes and plenty of history. (If you have time and sufficient spare battery power, which on this route should not be problem, Marbury Country Park has numerous cycle paths to explore).

Leave Northwich by crossing the River Weaver and close by the Bruner Mond works (or what’s left of it) ex ICI and AstraZeneca. Again crossing the Weaver, the route soon finds Anderson Boat Lift between the Trent & Mersey Canal and River Weaver. A masterpiece of engineering and certainly worth stopping at if only for the café.

Continuing past the end of Budworth Mere to Comberbach, then turning off and onto Great Budworth’s cobbled street. If you are still thirsty or hungry there is the George and Dragon. Again following the route to the A556 great care needs taking when crossing. From here it is an easy ride back past Tabley Estate to Knutsford and the end of the adventure.
